Year 12: Institution feedback and learner response

Teachers feedback :

- Handout has questions/ gaps which is a really nice idea that immediately encourages engagement.
- Good to see some conversation between students discussing the questions. Also good to put the answers up clearly straight away in case anyone was wrong.
-Two hugely important brands (HBO & WB)
-History and breadth of institution is covered well. 'US version of virgin media' is a great way to describe it.

-Presentation lacks depth after starting so well and you should always try to avoid reading text off of the slide to your audience.
-It would have been nice to have a plenary or little activity at the end to finish the lesson off.

WWW- I think our starter activity with the hand outs was a good idea , it helped everyone engage with other and get thinking. We mentioned some important key facts about particular brands etc. and we made sure all of the information we didn't cover in the presentation was on the handouts.

EBI- I think our presentation could have been a little longer our had more depth. We added some important information however , we didn't have any simple or interesting key facts. It would have been a better presentation if we didn't read off of our sheets or the power point on the board and lastly we should ended it with an interesting activity to link back to what we presented to the class in the beginning.

Write a sentence for each of the seven institutions we have covered in these lessons. How much have we learned?

MIGRAIN introduction to Media: Reading an image

Denotation

This is an advertisement for the sports brand Reebok, which is being promoted by hip hop artist 50 cent.

Colour

This poster is in black and white. The darkness around 50 cent gives off a serious/mysterious vibe from him. By creating direct light on his face also makes him stand out so we can see his facial expression in more detail.

Pose

To begin with he is looking directly at the camera so it looks as though he is looking straight at the reader. His facial expression is also serious which gives off an effect on the reader that this Reebok brand is something serious or important. His body on the other hand is not facing directly straight, his back is turned away from the other side of the poster. This could signify that he is not looking back in life and looking forward to the future. His body position also contrasts with the text on the other side of the poster 'take advantage of today as tomorrow is not promised'.

Framing + Composition
The poster consists of two images 50 cent and his fingerprints on the other side. These two images are split equally in half which may portray equality. This could signify that although has had a bad side to him and a bad past , he also has a good side and is willing to better himself.

Lighting
The lighting is shone directly on 50 cent's face which creates dark shadows behind him. This may also signify that anything behind him in unimportant , what is important is him as a person now.

Type of shot
This type of shot is a medium shot. It is not too close up but not too far away at the same time.

Subject matter
There is not exactly a product being advertised in this poster which suggests that it is the Reebok brand that is being advertised overall.

Denotation
This is a celebrity endorsement by Justin Bieber and Lara Stone for Calvin Klein Jeans.

Colour
The colour of this poster is in black and white. The use of black and white in this poster helps us see the contrast between Justin's skin colour and his dark tattoos and dark hair. This creates a contrast between Justin and Lara as Lara is a well-known dutch model who is portrayed as a very feminine, classy female. Whereas Justin's tattoos make him look more masculine and are also very symbolic which can help us read his personality instantly through the image. For example the cross in the middle of his chest may signify that he is a religious man and that fact that it is in the middle of his chest may tell us that he thinks he is godly.

Pose
The male figure in this advert is in front of the female, she is also grasping his chest and jeans. This could be reinforcing the stereotypes made upon woman that they need a male figure in their life. In addition the tattoo in the middle of his chest is of a cross which may be telling us that he thinks he is godly this again is reinforced by the female standing behind him and grasping onto his chest and jeans , portraying how she is attached to him and feels safe in his presence.

Type of shot

This is a medium shot. This shot enables us to see a good amount of detail in the image for example Justin's tattoos. It also allows us to see the background and surroundings however this advert / image does not have much surroundings.

The target audience for this advert is females 50% male 50% aged 16-35.

Subject matter

The product being advertised in this image is the Calvin Klein boxers that Justin Bieber is wearing. Again we can easily see this as the use of black and white makes the white boxers stand out on the poster . The model (Lara Stone) is also gripping onto Justin's jeans and pulling them down

Introduction

I chose AS Media studies because I found media a very interesting and fun subject to do when I did it for my GCSEs. While I study AS Media studies I hope to learn how to edit videos at a more advanced level and learn to use the equipment ,such as cameras much better. My personal media interests are movies and TV series on Netflix. The type of things I watch on Netflix are breaking bad , pretty little liars, orange is the new black etc. I have past experience in Media from when I did it in year 10 for one of my GCSEs, this is where i learned how to edit music videos up to a certain level etc. I've also done photography in year 9 for one of my GCSEs , so I have some experience in using cameras and taking good pictures. Lastly my other post 16 subjects I have picked are economics and psychology.
